N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Mary Faith Young was a life-long active Preservationist, having a hand in maintaining some of the oldest and historic sites in the area.
One of those sites was the 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse.
On Friday, May 13th, close family and friends were on hand to help celebrate Mary at the courthouse. By maintaining her stance on the preservation of the oldest courthouse in the state, Mary is known for having a major part in saving the courthouse in Stutsman County.
To honor Mary, the courthouse committee decided to dedicate a room to her.
During the dedication ceremony, Board President Mike Williams opened by stating that Mary’s efforts reached him when he was just 7 years old.
Former State Historical Society Director Jim Sperry recalled the history of how the courthouse came to be protected from demolition, pointing out how avid Mary fought to maintain the 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse.
Jim Smorada, a close friend of Mary Young, and Mary’s oldest child Mary Catherine Lutz, also spoke during the ceremony. You can find pictures from the dedication below.
