(NewsDakota.com) – The Jimmies won their 50th game of the season on Sunday to hold off elimination for another day. However, on Monday they were beaten by Mayville State 9-6 to end their run towards a North Star tournament championship.
The Jamestown pitching staff had some trouble slowing the Comet offense surrendering 19 hits until Cade Campell and Julien Garcia finally started putting up zeros in the final three innings.
Jamestown trailed 5-0 before Quinn Irey hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to two. Unfortunately, the pitchers gave a few right back to Mayville and then the ensuing inning saw Alex Sablan hit a three-run home run of his own to make the score 7-6.
Immediately, the Comets extended their lead to three runs and the score held there. Irey hit a long fly ball to the track into the teeth of the wind that would have pulled the Jimmies within one in the eighth.
Kalton Agnes was almost unhittable over the final four innings. He struck out five while allowing just one hit.
Mayville was beaten by Bellevue 14-1 in the championship game. The Comets earn the conference’s automatic bid to the national tournament; joining Bellevue (regular-season champion) and Jamestown (host).
The brackets will come out Friday at 3pm. Jack Brown Stadium will host a five-team double-elimination tournament beginning May 17th.
