N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——-A rematch of the 2015 state class B state championship game was close for 5 innings but Carrington would avenge last years 4-1 loss for the state title with 6 runs in their final 2 at bats to defeat M-P-C-G 9 -2. Tied 2-2 after the Patriots scored twice in the 4th inning, the Cardinals scored once in the 5th, 4 times in the 6th, and 2 more insurance runs in the the 7th to secure the victory.
Carrington scored an early run on an RBI single from Braxton Hewitt, scoring Connor Wendel who led off the first inning with a single. The Cards would add a run in the 4th inning on a Jayden Shipman RBI double that scored Alex Stusynzski. After the Patriots tied the game at 2-2 in the 4th, the Cards came back with the go ahead run in the 5th on a Lucas Geiszler RBI sing that plated Wendel, who scored the 2nd of his three runs on the day. Carrington would pull away in the 6th, scoring 4 times, rapping out 4 of the teams 13 hits in the inning. Geiszler would add 2 more RBI’s with a two run single, and Wendel added an RBI single also. Payton Smith would add a 2 run double in the 7th to secure the 9-2 victory. Brett Lyman and Garrett Bickett scored on the Smith double. Lyman would pickup the pitching victory, going all 7 innings allowing the 2 earned runs on hits. Lyman struck out 10 Patriot batters and walked 4 to pickup the win. Carrington improves 12-1 on the season and M-P-C-G drops to 4-9 overall. Geiszler, Wendel, Hewitt, and Jayden Rosenau all had 2 hits in the game. Carrington will host M-P-B and Midkota-DP on Monday and Tuesday, and travel to Velva on Friday this week.
