N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The name of the man struck by a BNSF train in downtown Jamestown Thursday afternoon has been released.

60 year-old Dennis Schneider of Jamestown was struck by a westbound train traveling at a low rate of speed at the crossing on 2nd Avenue. Police Chief Scott Edinger stated that witness reports say Schneider got hung up on the tracks while crossing.

City ordinances prohibit trains for sounding their whistles when coming through the community, so “quite zones” have been set-up for individuals looking to cross the tracks. Chief Edinger stated that Schneider did not use the quiet zone while crossing the rails.

When EMS crews arrived, he was alert and awake. He was transported to the JRMC and later airlifted to a Fargo hospital.

BNSF stopped trains and closed crossings at 2nd Avenue, 7th Avenue and 3rd Street for several hours while officials investigated the scene. Schneider’s injuries have not been disclosed at this time.

Chief Edinger stated that BNSF and officials will be looking at this incident to see if measures can be taken to prevent this from happening in the future.
