Thoughts:

We have had a typical Valley City spring where weather has limited our practices, but our girls rose for the first match.

With the iffy weather, we played singles first just in case the rain came early.  We came out strong in singles which has usually been not as strong as doubles going 6-0 in matches with a total game score of 72-12.  Our top three performed as expected.  Maia moved from #4 last year to #1 this year and Breanna moved from #6 to #3 as we graduated our former #1 and #3, Clarissa Olson and Sam Coit.  We let a senior, Abby Ingstad, play through a rough second set.  She rose to the challenge and mentally figured things out on her own and finished off the match.  8th grader Cali Halgrimson and sophomore Angela Larson rounded out our singles playing their first varsity matches ever and notching their first varsity win.  Congratulations!

In doubles, Maia Wendel and Reagan Ingstad had a lot of fun and played some very high quality tennis.  Reagan didn’t even drop a game on the day, going 24-0.  Halgrimson and Larson have never played doubles together before today, but won convincingly to earn their second varsity win on the same day.  Abby and Breanna showed a lot of heart.  They were down 5-6 and forced a tiebreaker.  In the tie-breaker, they were down 1-4.  They fought off two set points before finally winning the set and then the match.

We have a deep team. Hannah Miller also beat Spicer and of right now, Hannah is our #10!  Rachel Schueneman was unavailable for the day.  She has improved considerably in the off season and will be in our line-up the next match.

Up next is at Red River on Tuesday. Red River is the umpteen time consecutive state champions that took out Sheyenne 5-4 today.
