(NewsDakota.com) After being down by five runs before they even made it to the plate, the Oakes High School baseball team slowly rallied and earned a 6-5 eight-inning victory Friday night in their home opener against the Loboes of LaMoure-Litchville/Marion.
The Tornadoes earned a run back in the third inning, another two in the fifth, and scored two in the seventh. LLM’s Drew Thielges, who came on in relief of Quinn Alo in the sixth inning, managed to strike out three batters in a row after allowing the bases to be loaded.
In the eighth inning, the Tornadoes brought in Lucas Lautt to take the reigns from Mike McKenna, and Lautt kept the Loboes at bay surrendering just a hit.
The bottom part of the inning saw Oakes (2-1 Class B Region I) acquire the bases loaded, and win the contest in a most unfortunate set of circumstances for the Loboes (1-2).
Matt Kuipers scored three runs in the victory, and Mike Kelly netted two hits.
Oakes heads north on Tuesday, April 19 to face the Jaguars of Northern Cass. Coverage on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com will start at 4:15 with first pitch scheduled for 4:30.
