CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Peter Smithhisler has accepted the position of vice president for student affairs at Valley City State University effective June 1, 2016.
Smithhisler will continue to direct VCSU Student Affairs efforts, leading the university’s work in the areas of enrollment, retention, and financial aid; residence life and dining; curricular activities; counseling, career and diversity services; parent relations; student safety, government and judicial process; and new student orientation.
“We’re delighted that Pete has made the commitment to stay in Valley City and continue his good work at VCSU,” said President Tisa Mason. “He has brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the position, and his efforts as interim VP have demonstrated his value to the institution and the VCSU community.”
Prior to joining VCSU last fall, Smithhisler had worked in Indianapolis, Ind., as president and CEO of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), as well as the executive vice president of the NIC Foundation. He had served at NIC since 1998, when he joined the organization as director of leadership education; he later served as vice president for media and community relations before becoming president and CEO.
Smithhisler previously had served Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colo.) as interim director of campus activities, associate director of campus activities and director of Greek life; the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks, N.D.) as coordinator of Greek life; and Western Illinois University (Macomb, Ill.)
He holds a master’s degree in college student personnel and a bachelor’s degree in public communication and human relations, both from Western Illinois University.
Smithhisler and his wife, Christina, are the parents of twin daughters, Hadley and Olivia.
