N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A statewide effort to crackdown on texting and driving in the state is underway.

Several agencies in North Dakota’s larger communities will be increasing enforcement during the full month of April to stop distracted driving. Jamestown Police Department is participating in the effort. Sgt. Brian Miller stated that the law has been in effect since 2011 and applies to all ages.

According to Sgt. Miller, detecting individuals who are using their phones while driving is easy. Individuals will have their eyes off the road or looking down. The fine for texting while driving is $100. Sgt. Miller pointed out that even texting or reading messages while stopped at a red light, stop sign or in construction, it’s still illegal.

Sgt. Miller reported that texting and driving is just as dangerous as drinking and driving.

The increased enforcement will continue through the month of April.
