Pokorny, 92, of Jamestown, ND, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 3, 2016 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.
Edna M. “Peg” Clark was born February 8, 1924 to Raymond and Thelma (Zimmerman) Clark. She grew up in Jamestown and attended school at St. John’s Academy, graduating in 1941. After graduation, Peg moved to Portland, OR and when WWII started worked in a defense factory, Swan Island Shipyards in Oregon. In Portland, she met Harold Pokorny from Clarkson, Nebraska and they were married July 5, 1942 in Portland. They moved back to Jamestown in 1944 where they made their home and raised 6 children. Hal passed away on January 19, 2004.
Peg was active locally and at the state level in the Democratic NPL party. She served as President of the ND Democratic NPL Women; was a candidate for State Auditor in 1972 and was a Delegate to the National Democratic Convention in Miami, Florida in 1972. Peg was a member of the American Legion and the VFW Auxiliaries in Jamestown and a member of St. James Basilica. She was also a founding member of F.A.C.E.
One of Peg’s favorite pastimes was duplicate bridge in which she played and taught. She also was an excellent seamstress and made quilts for family members. One of her specialties was her braided wool rugs which she made for many people. Peg enjoyed spending time with her family and her extended family as well as enjoying reading, card games and games.
Peg is survived by her children, Dr. David (Dorothy) Pokorny, Bismarck, ND, Toni Pirkl, Jamestown, ND, Jan Pokorny Tuel, Fargo, ND, Mike Pokorny, Grand Junctions, CO, and Sue (Dan) Coyne, Jamestown, ND; daughter-in-law, Fern Pokorny, Dickinson, ND; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; her many nieces and nephews, including the children of her beloved sister, Berd Smith; her special friend and niece, Cindy Smith Hinz; and her brother, Ray Clark, Fargo, ND.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Dr. Richard Pokorny; brothers, Frank Clark and Tim Clark; sisters, Evelyn Schacher, Pat Smith, Geraldine “Berd” Smith; and her parents.
Celebration of her Life: 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Visitation: 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2016 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.
