N.D. (AP) — A postal worker from North Dakota has been sentenced to home monitoring and ordered to pay back more than $10,000 that was stolen from a registered mail sack.

Ronald Slattery is charged in federal court with mail theft. He pleaded guilty in November.

Authorities say Slattery took money that was intended to be delivered from the post office in Jamestown to the post office in Oakes.

U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson says the electronic monitoring should not last longer than six months. The judge ordered Slattery to serve three years on probation.

A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.
