N.D. (AP) — Williston’s City Commission has rejected a proposal to slowly phase out oil field crew camps within city limits rather than eliminate them this summer.
The commission late last year set a July 1 deadline for the camps to shut down, but oil industry officials said some temporary housing is still needed despite the current oil slump.
Commissioner Deanette Piesik proposed reducing the number of crew camp beds 25 percent annually for the next two years, with the complete elimination of the camps by 2020. the commission on Tuesday night rejected the plan on a 3-2 vote.
The decision came after investors in hotels and apartment buildings argued against the proposal, saying they’d be hurt by more temporary housing in the city.
