CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Rick Ross, Associate Professor of Career and Technology Education at Valley City State University participated in the Association for Career and Technical Education’s National Policy Seminar held February 29th through March 2nd in Washington D.C. The policy seminar focuses on legislation and its impact on Career and Technical Education.

Ross says this year’s seminar was important because of the passing of the “Every Student Succeeds Act” and its impact on Career and Technical Education.

Ross participated in workshops on legislation that focuses on the areas of student achievement, teacher recruiting, teacher retention, and the Higher Education Act.

Ross visited with several legislators about the impact Career and Technical Education has in filling jobs for the “New Economy” that several states, including North Dakota, are experiencing.

Ross met with the North Dakota Congressional delegations of Senators John Hoeven, Heidi Heitkamp, and Representative Kevin Cramer. He also met with Eric Seleznow (Deputy Assistant Secretary of U.S. Department of Labor) and Mark Mitsui (Assistant Secretary, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education for the U.S. Department of Education.)

Ross focused his visit with legislators on the teacher recruitment and retention for Creating Quality Technical Educators Act that will be debated in both the U-S Senate and House.  He says support for Career and Technical Education is strong as three of North Dakota’s Congressional Delegation legislators are part of their respective CTE Caucuses.
