(NewsDakota.com) The community of Edgeley had been waiting since 1998 to celebrate a district championship in boys basketball. That wait came to an end as the Rebels of Edgeley-Kulm-Montpeiler were crowned the 2016 North Dakota Class B District 5 Tournament Champions Monday night at the Jamestown Civic Center.

In spite of the loss, the Ellendale Cardinals, along with the LaMoure-Litchville/Marion Loboes, and Carrington Cardinals are all advancing to the Region III Tournament next week.

Region III Qualifier: LaMoure-LM 66 Oakes 50

In a rematch of last year’s Region III Championship, the Loboes outscored the Tornadoes 26-13 in the final eight minutes to propel them to victory. Quinn Alo was the force behind the second half surge for LLM with a game high 25 points, and a perfect 12 for 12 from the floor.

Oakes, who had advanced to the last two regional championship games in two different regions, had a team high 26 points from Ethan Zetocha in his final game.

Region III Qualifier: Carrington 72 Barnes County North 32

The Bison started the game with a 5-0 run, but the Cardinals soon rallied, and never looked back. Carrington outscored BCN 34-13 in the second half to send them to the Region III tournament.

Garrett Bickett had a team high 22 points for the victors while Allen Contreas registered 21 in the loss.

District 5 Championship: Edgeley-Kulm-Montpeiler 52 Ellendale 47

The Rebels looked early as they were going to blow the Cardinals out the water after a 20-7 first quarter advantage. The Cardinals rallied to pull within three points at intermission and even pulled to within two points in the second half, but never were able to tie or take the lead.

Tanner Zahn lead EKM with 21 points. Ellendale had a team high 16 points from Logan Schumacher.
