ND – (NewsDakota.com) The dedication of the Barnes Rural Water Treatment plant was held on Wednesday, February 24th west of Eckelson.

Project manager Darrell Hournbuckle of Interstate Engineering says the new plant has doubled the efficiency for treating water.

Perry Kapaun has worked 32 years for the Barnes Rural Water District. He’s been the manager for 20 years. He says the state of the art plant is user friendly.

The new $5 million dollar plant was named after Vernon Anderson who has been on the Barnes Rural Water board since day one, more than 40 years ago.

40 years ago Barnes Rural Water had 650 users, by the end of 2016 there will be slightly more than 2,000 customers according to Kapaun. He says more than 6,000 people use the rural water system in Barnes County.

Hournbuckle says 60 to 75 percent of the projects have been funded through a combination of federal and state dollars with the balance by way of low interest loans.

Last year the Barnes Rural Water District received a $1.9 million loan through USDA Rural Development to expand water services to more than 200 users in the city of Kathryn and the surrounding area.
