CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Landowners in Griggs and Barnes County approved of a project to drain a portion of Rose Slough.

Barnes County Water Resource District board member Dale Jorissen says eligible landowner’s voted 65 percent in favor of the Silver Creek project to lower a portion of Rose Slough into the Sheyenne River using ditches and culverts along a 16 mile stretch.

The Griggs and Barnes County Joint Water Resource District Boards will pursue obtaining a permit for the project through the State Water Commission.

Jorissen says the estimated cost is about $750,000. He says the cost share ratio will be a 60/40 split of an assessment district made up of a portion of landowners in northwestern Barnes and southwestern Griggs Counties.

Barnes County landowners in that assessment district will pick up the lion share of the project pending state approval.
