N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City junior guard Nate Rodriguez made a right-handed lay-up as time expired in regulation to force overtime against Fargo Davies on Tuesday night. 

The Hi-Liners and the Eagles were tied at 82 apiece heading into the extra four minutes of play in Eastern Dakota Conference basketball, however Rodriguez wasn’t done scoring for Valley City. 

Rodriguez made a right handed scoop layup to give Valley City a 92-88 lead with 35 seconds left in overtime. 

The Eagles would answer moments later with a Conor Rayl bucket with 28 seconds left, which trimmed the lead to 2 points. 

Davies had multiple chances at the end, as Jake Paper missed a pair of free throws to tie the game with 1.9 seconds left, then after a Hi-Liner turnover, the Eagles had a chance to win the game with 1 second left in overtime. Andy Bear’s three-pointer missed at the buzzer, which gave Valley City a 92-90 overtime win in the EDC. 

Rodriguez and Levi Nix each scored 24 points for the Hi-Liners (6-7 overall, 4-7 EDC), while Hunter Burchill poured on another 18 points. 

Davies (10-3 overall, 9-3 EDC) were led by Jake Paper with 23 points on the night. 

Valley City shot 16 of 17 from the free throw line, while Fargo Davies went 12 of 22.
