(NewsDakota.com) – The NDHSAA on Monday voted for a preliminary football plan that would take place for the 2017-18 seasons. No realignment suggestions will be released until late March and nothing will be made official until October.
The proposed plan would take two teams out of the Class AAA division and drop the total number down to 14. Ten teams would make up Class AA, 32 teams at Class A, and the rest playing Nine-man football.
The current enrollment numbers put Devils Lake squarely outside the top-14, which common sense says would make up Class AAA. Jamestown is just below the cut line as well, but without quite the divide that Devils Lake has. Jamestown, Fargo North, and Grand Forks Central all are within a 100 students of each other.
One thing to keep in mind is that schools have the option to opt-up a division. Something that Jamestown may or may not decide to do.
The potential change doesn’t appear it will effect Valley City, Oakes or Carrington.
There will also be some debate on the cut line for Class AA. Six teams; Dickinson Trinity, Stanley/Powers Lake, Central Dakota, Central Cass, Beluah, and Grafton all are within a small number of each other and figure to make up the final two Class AA spots.
