“Et” McKay, age 100, of Valley City, ND, died Thursday, January 14th at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, January 18th at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and one hour before the service on Monday, all at Epworth United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery in Valley City in the Spring.
Ethelyn Claire Sletten, the daughter of Albert and Rose (Evenson) Sletten was born January 31, 1915 in Hannaford, ND. Et grew up and attended school in Hannaford, ND where she graduated from Hannaford High School. Et was a cheerleader and played girls basketball for Hannaford. A highlight of her high school memories was marching in the high school band at the World’s Fair in Chicago. In 1933, she entered nurses training at the Sisters of Mercy Hospital in Valley City. She graduated from the Program in 1936, she began working for a number of years as a private duty nurse in Valley City and Jamestown. On August 19, 1940 she married Ralph McKay. She and Ralph were co-owners of the Dario-Drive Inn in Valley City for 22 years. Ethelyn was very active member of Epworth United Methodist Church where she served on many committees over the years. In 1989, she was selected as “Jewel of Women” in mission for United Methodist Women. Et was a volunteer for many years at the gift shop at both Mercy Hospital and the Sheyenne Care Center. Ethelyn had a real “green thumb” and enjoyed growing plants for her family and friends. Ralph died in 2001.
Ethelyn is survived by her children, James (Patricia) McKay, Alexandria, MN and Julie (Larry) Bergrud, Cedar Rapids, IA; four grandchildren, Mitchell (Mandy) McKay, Montevideo, MN, Margo (Rich Hadler) McKay, Owatonna, MN, Matthew (Angela) McKay, Rochester, MN and Lt. Col. Christopher Bergrud, Tampa, FL; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Ethelyn was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother Orv, and two sisters Evelyn and Audrey.
