N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says 204 teacher openings are still unfilled during the current school year.

Baesler says it’s an indication of the seriousness of North Dakota’s teacher shortage.

Thirty-five career and technical education teaching jobs are still vacant. There are 32 openings in social-studies teaching jobs … 28 vacancies in special education … and 20 open positions in business education.

Baesler says schools have been hiring retired teachers and administrators to fill some of the openings.

During the last school year – 314 retired teachers and administrators were hired to go back to work.

Baesler has put together a task force to look for solutions to the teacher shortage problem.

The task force is marketing the teaching profession to young people as an attractive career option.

A website showing job opportunities is also being developed.
