Ann “Chic” (Smith) Heer, Jamestown, ND, died at her home of advanced lung cancer on January 2, 2016 just following her 84th birthday.

Chic was born at Trinity Hospital in Jamestown, the daughter of Robert “Lyle” and Effie (Genzel) Smith. Her mother died when she was 6 years old. Her father later married Agnes (Lulay) Smith who raised Chic in Jamestown with Lyle. The family owned and operated the Lyle Smith Auto Repair Shop for many years. As proud graduate of St. John’s Academy High School in 1950, she remained a supporter of the school.  She worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell immediately post high school.  On June 17, 1953, she married Clifford “Cliff” Howard Heer at St. James Catholic Church. She has been a member of St. James Basilica her entire life. Chic and Cliff were married for 56 years, when he passed in 2009. For 62 years, Chic made her home on Third Avenue SW in Jamestown where Chic and Cliff raised four children and entertained many. During those years, she worked at Walsh’s Bowling Center (Buffalo Lanes) and later was the owner of Century-Mercury Motor Fright with her half- brother, John Robert Smith.

Chic and Cliff were members of the Jamestown Elks, American Legion, Eagles, VFW, and supporters of Jamestown Hockey.  In her earlier years, Chic enjoyed being a member of Jamestown Women’s Bowling League and Hillcrest Women’s Golf Association. She also enjoyed their family cabin on Spiritwood Lake – “Heer’s Hutch”. Recently, her favorite time was spent with her many friends in local bridge clubs and community activities and with her family.

Survivors include 4 children: Noreen (Rob) Nicol, Denver, CO, Doug (Sharon) Heer, Eugene, OR, Tom (Leona) Heer, Eugene, OR, and Tracy (Paul) Monson, Jamestown, ND.  She has 8 grandchildren:  Brent Nicol, Erica Nicol, Garrett Hill, Ross Monson, Lily Heer, Christopher Heer, Lauren Heer, and Ty Monson and  2 step-grandchildren: Katie Monson and Morgan Monson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a half-brother, John Robert Smith.

To honor Chic’s final wishes, there will be no formal services. A memorial mass by Fr. Joe Barrett will held at the North Dakota State Hospital Chapel on Tuesday, January 5th at 12:15 PM. At a later date, she will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery with her husband and parents. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Academy, Jamestown’s Meals on Wheels Program, or JRMC Hospice Program.  The extended Heer family thanks everyone for their kindness and support over the many years.
