Marian Charlotte Monson, the daughter of Carl and Martha (Olstad) Monson, was born October 26, 1924 on the family farmstead near Kathryn, ND. Marian attended a one room school house perched on a hilltop along the Kathryn Road where the frame is still standing today. The family later moved to Valley City where Marion attended and graduated from College High with Honors in 1942. Marion then worked as a bookkeeper at the Fair Store in Valley City for Karl J. Olson from 1942 until 1950. She met the love of her life while working at the Fair Store, Ernest Martin Nelsen. The couple was introduced by Ernest’s brother Gordon Nelsen and his girlfriend Emma Monson. Gordon and Emma were married first and Ernest and Marian were in their wedding party. On May 14, 1950 Marian and Ernest were married in Valley City. The couple built the house they both lived in until the time of their deaths in Valley City. Marian and Ernest were very talented gardeners, and raised many flowers that took trophies at flower shows. The couple also raised over 50 different varieties of Roses. Marian cooked everything from scratch, no mixes, and made all of the clothes for their two daughters. Ernest and Marian were very proud of their two girls that they had adopted, and being involved with all of their families activities. They also traveled together to all lower 50 states. Marian and Ernest were always together, if you saw one, you usually saw both. Marian’s favorite title was that of Grandma to her grandchildren, it always brought such a smile to her face to see them all. Ernest passed away on December 31, 2012; part of Marian passed away that day too.
Marian is survived by her two daughters, Debbie (Darren) Horter, Grand Forks, ND and Cynthia (Thomas) Tatom, Valley City, ND; grandchildren, Martha Quanbeck, Alexandra and Marissa Sullivan, all Grand Forks, ND, and Jennifer (Marshall) Heitzmann, Valley City, ND; great grandchildren Piper Anglebrandt, Charlee Sullivan and Alexis and Gracie Heitzmann; a very special friend, Elizabeth “Beth” Oppegaard, Jamestown, ND; one sister in law, Della Johnson; many nieces and cousins; and close neighbors, Dorothy Hegdahl and Janice and O’Neil Oppegaard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, many aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.
