(NewsDakota.com) On a night in which the Oakes community honored a team and a coach that won five consecutive Cowbell games, the Ellendale High School girls and boys basketball teams soundly defeated the Tornadoes, and the boys won their fourth Cowbell game in a row.
The girls of Ellendale improved to 2-3 and 1-1 in Class B District 5, and Isabel Wedell had a team high 22 points as the Cardinals soared past the Tornadoes 47-25. Oakes (1-5, 0-2 District 5) had a team high 15 points from Shelby Roney, but the Tornadoes managed only one point in the third quarter, and did not score a field goal in the second half until a few minutes into the fourth quarter.
The 70th playing of the Cowbell game was close at the half, as Ellendale had an eight point lead. However, just like the Tornadoes girls, the Oakes boys incurred a significant setback in the third quarter; being outscored 24-7 which included a 16-0 Cardinal run on the way to a commanding 64-38 victory.
Brennen Vance, who hit the game winning three pointer to win the 2014 Cowbell scored a game high 22 points to complete the four-peat, and improve their record to 2-0 and 1-0 in District 5. The Tornadoes, now 0-3 and 0-1 in District 5 had a game high 12 points from Ethan Zetocha.
