Gaylen Orvis Aas, the son of Jens and Agnes (Olstad) Aas, was born February 27, 1940 in Valley City, ND. Gaylen grew up in the Kathryn, ND area where his mother died when he was very young. Gaylen was raised by his father, brothers and his sister. He attended and graduated 8th grade at the Ellis-Nelson School near Kathryn, ND. He was baptized at the Sheyenne Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Kathryn in 1955. He married Barbara Hicks in April, 1961. Gaylen worked for various farmers in the area and was a self-taught carpenter. He also worked for the North Dakota State Highway Department in Valley City for 35 years. He did various jobs for the DOT including planting many trees along I-94 from Tappen to Tower City, ND. He was very proud of these trees as they were all planted as saplings which are now established trees. His wife Barbara passed away on November 3, 1993. In October, 1996 Gaylen had a severe stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side and took his speech. His significant other, Carol Nelson helped him live on his own until 2004 at which time he became a resident of the Sheyenne Care Center. Gaylen did very well with his handicap and enjoyed life the best he could. Gaylen enjoyed doing puzzles, enjoyed dancing and country music, going for rides in the car, playing BINGO, watching western movies and driving his mobility scooter everywhere. He was known to sing in the halls at the Care Center and you were only a stranger to him once. Gaylen was a member of the Valley City Eagles Club.
Gaylen is survived by his significant other, Carol Nelson, Valley City; one brother, Vernon (Lois) Aas, Valley City, ND; one sister-in-law, Doris Aas, Valley City, ND; and several nieces and nephews.
Gaylen was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara, his brothers Alden, Jimmy, Kenneth and David, and one sister, Delphine.
In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Sheyenne Valley Cemetery, Jim Stevens, president, 4423 County Road 21, Valley City, ND 58072.
