N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Farmers Union is urging members of Congress to reject the “Bipartisan Budget Agreement of 2015″ due to a provision that would cut $3 billion from private sector crop insurance.

President Mark Watne stated that the budget that was unveiled Tuesday morning in the U.S. House would effectively reopen the farm bill by making cuts to the crop insurance program.

“Once again, rural America is being asked to make budget concessions on the backs of family farmers,” said Watne. “We just passed the 2014 Farm Bill that included $23 billion in budget savings, and now Congress wants to pull the rug out from under the Federal Crop Insurance program.”

The deal would cut reimbursement rates from 14 percent to 8.9 percent for Approved Insurance Providers. Companies that have sold their insurance operations since 2013 include John Deere Insurance Company, OneBeacon Insurance Group Ltd., Monsanto Co., and the Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.
