CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Bismarck St. Mary’s capitalized on three big plays to defeat the Valley City Hi-Liners 21-8 in a West Region football game.

It started in the first quarter when Logan Pieterick hit Casey Ulher for a 52 yard reception, that resulted in a first and goal at the three yard line. Jake Heinert scored two plays later from three yards out to give St. Mary’s a 7-0 lead with 6:16 left in the first quarter.

St. Mary’s turned to their special teams in the second quarter for the next touchdown. Andy Huber went 45 yards on a blocked punt return for a touchdown to give the Saints a 14-0 lead with 8:03 left to go in the second quarter.

Valley City responded with the next score, as Nate Rodriguez scampered for a 4 yard rushing touchdown to cut the Saints lead to 14-8, after a Levi Nix to Anthony Capistran two point conversion right before halftime.

The only score in the second half came from St. Mary’s on a 74 yard touchdown reception by Casey Uhler from Pieterick with 8:20 left in the third quarter.

St. Mary’s would go on to win 21-8 over Valley City at Hannah Field.

Valley City enters the postseason as the number two seed from the West. They’ll host Central Cass on Saturday, October 31st in the quarterfinal round of the Class AA playoffs. Time has yet to be determined.
