N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Extending the grazing season is a major focus of a winter grazing workshop the North Dakota State University Extension Service is hosting Nov. 4-5.
Fara Brummer, area Extension livestock systems specialist at NDSU’s Central Grasslands Research Extension Center and one of the workshop presenters. “Extending grazing into fall and winter can reduce those costs, as well as add nutrient amendment to soil for next year’s growth.”
The workshop begins Nov. 4 at the Quality Inn in Jamestown with a series of presentations, followed by a banquet. Nov. 5 will start with a producer panel and breakfast buffet, then attendees will take a trip to the Central Grasslands Research Extension Center, which is near Streeter.
The Nov. 4 portion of the workshop will begin at 9 a.m. Topics that day are: extending the grazing season with annual forages, fall and winter grazing for improved soil health, techniques for fall grazing, wildlife conservation partnering opportunities, extended grazing and livestock management, the integrated system approach to fall grazing, nutritional requirements of livestock in winter, extended grazing and manure management, and water quality and the benefits of extended grazing.
Presenters include NDSU Extension specialists, Research Extension Center animal scientists, and representatives from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, North Dakota Natural Resources Trust and North Dakota Grazing Lands Coalition.
Bart Lardner of the Western Beef Development Centre in Saskatchewan will be the keynote speaker at the banquet.
The producer panel on Nov. 5 will discuss bale grazing, no-export hay, residue grazing and water development, and cornstalk grazing.
The trip to the Central Grasslands Research Extension Center will include stops at a millet stand with bale, swath and forage grazing, and demonstration plots of a warm- and cool-season cover crop mix for grazing, and cornstalk grazing with supplementation.
The registration fee is $55 for the entire workshop or $30 for attending one day if paid by Oct. 23. After that, the fee is $75 for the entire workshop and $40 for one day. The fee includes meals and transportation to and from the Central Grasslands center.
