ND (NewsDakota.com) The 20th anniversary of the Miss Carrington and Miss KDAK Scholarship Pageant took place at the Carrington High School last Sunday night. Five contestants competed for generous scholarships, awards and the 2016 crown. Bailey Schumann was crowned Miss Carrington 2016 and Miranda Peterson was crowned Miss KDAK 2016 Sunday, September 27th at the High School.
The show began with Miss North Dakota, Delanie Wiedrich singing the National Anthem. The Contestants and Miss Carrington, Sabrina Wolfe, performed an exciting opening number to “Beautiful Now” by Zedd, choreographed by Sabrina. She then lead the on stage interviews before the Contestants performed their talents.
The audience enjoyed an extra special scholarship pageant that included a 20th anniversary celebration number by the former contestants to Taylor Swift’s, “Shake It Off”. Former contestants and title holders had enjoyed a reunion of sorts, rehearsing earlier in the day. The evening gown competition, including their “Little Sisters”, completed the competitions. Private interviews and swimsuit fitness competitions were held earlier in the day. Sabrina performed her talent number from the Miss North Dakota Scholarship pageant, a jazz dance to “Move”, by Little Mix. Delanie Weidrich performed a vocal number in the first half as well as performing her Miss America talent, “A New Life”, from the musical, Jekyll and Hyde.
Bailey Schumann was crowned Miss Carrington, 2016, receiving a $1,000 award. She also received the High Score Interview Award of $200, The Munkeby Interview Award of $100, the High Score Evening Gown Award of $200, the High Score Ralston Swimsuit/Fitness Award of $100 and the People’s Choice Award. She performed a self-written dramatic monologue entitled, “Don’t Pass On Being Passionate” and promoted her platform, “Understanding Mental Illness, Not Weakness”. She is a sophomore at Minnesota State University Moorhead. She was sponsored by Century 21-Alison Schumann and is the daughter of Shane & Alison Schumann.
Miranda Peterson was crowned Miss KDAK 2016, receiving a $1,000 award. She also received the High Score Talent Award of $200. She performed a lyrical dance to “Gravity”, by Sara Bareilles and promoted her platform, “Love Your Selfie: Positive Body Image”. She is a senior at Minnesota State University Moorhead and was sponsored by her parents, Randy and Barb Peterson. Savanna Buskness received the Participation Award of $800 and the Katie Jo Gussiaas High School Scholar Award of $200. She performed a lyrical dance to “Safe and Sound” by Taylor Swift and promoted her platform, “Ambition for Nutrition and Busy Bodies”. She is a freshman at the University Of North Dakota and was sponsored by Small Steps Childcare. She is the daughter of Robert and Karen Buskness.
Nikki Braaten received the Participation Award of $800 and the College Scholar Award of $200. She performed as Wednesday Addams singing, “Pulled” from Broadway’s The Addams Family Musical and promoted her platform, Reading Across America: Teaching and Spreading the Magic of Books. She is a junior at the University of North Dakota and was sponsored by her parents, Andy and Ruth Braaten.
Savanna Buskness received the Participation Award of $800 and the Katie Jo Gussiaas High School Scholar Award of $200. She performed a lyrical dance to “Safe and Sound” by Taylor Swift and promoted her platform, “Ambition for Nutrition and Busy Bodies”. She is a freshman at the University Of North Dakota and was sponsored by Small Steps Childcare. She is the daughter of Robert and Karen Buskness.
Lakien Vetter received the Participation Award of $800 and the Bismarck State College Applied Scholarship of $1,000. She performed the vocal solo, “I Hope You Dance”, by Lee Ann Womack and promoted her platform, “Don’t Be Mean Behind the Screen!”. She is a freshman at Bismarck State College and her sponsor was Vetter Construction. She is the daughter of Mike and Melissa Vetter.
Over $80,000 has now been awarded to well over 100 contestants over 20 years, $5800 awarded Sunday night. This year, 92 businesses and individuals contributed to this scholarship fund and 31 business and individuals donated products and services to the contestants and production. These sponsors, along with 63 volunteers made this scholarship opportunity available and they are featured in the “Thank You” ad in this issue.
Miss Carrington will be representing the Central City at the Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant in June, her sponsorship fee paid by the Carrington Area Chamber of Commerce and the Carrington Convention and Visitors Bureau. Miss KDAK will be representing region at the state pageant, sponsorship fee paid by KDAK Radio.

On a side note, Galt has served on the Pageant Committee since its inception 20 years ago, she announced earlier this year that she will step down as director. To her surprise during the pageant, former Miss Carrington, Katie Ralston 2007, gave a special presentation to Galt and her family on stage, thanking her for her 20 years of hard work and dedication to the pageant.
