CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fargo South has arguably the best two tennis players in the state in Lawley and Youngs. They proved it yesterday by only dropping 1 game in six sets when Dalton and Brandon were playing good tennis. They are just that good. There would be a potential for an all-Fargo South state singles championship match.
Hunter and Riley played the same team that Dalton and Brandon beat last year in the state qualifier. Again, they played very good tennis, but their opponents were top notch. Hunter came out in his singles and played Schulz very smartly by being patient and letting Schulz make the mistake and taking the net at the right times. Hunter staved off a set point at deuce down 4-5, had two set points of his own at 40-30 6-5, finally losing in the tiebreaker. In the second set, Vic Youngs, the Fargo South Coach, switched up Schulz’s game plan against Hunter and limited his unforced errors and made Hunter play many more balls.
Liam took a little time to figure out how to return a very hard spin serve, but he became more comfortable as the match went on. Dempsey is getting more comfortable at the net. He poached a few today for winners which is what we need him to do. Collin played some great points in both the singles and the doubles. He is moving better in doubles and hitting smarter shots. When he plants his back foot and moves into the ball on his ground strokes, he can hit with the best of them!
After a rough week of getting beat 9-0 twice, several players on our team came together and played more tennis after the match was over. We played intense while having an absolute blast! Our team needed that before going into our matches tomorrow, the play-in match Monday, and then regionals. Lets go out there and play that same way the rest of the year!
