N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After more than 3 years of planning and study, the St. Paul based, farmer owned cooperative, CHS says it has decided against moving ahead with the 3 billion dollar proposed fertilizer plant at Spiritwood, North Dakota, 10 miles northeast of Jamestown.

CHS spokesperson Lani Jordan calls the decision “difficult” but says it came down to economics and the return on investment for the co-op’s members:

Jordan says CHS has come up with a solution by making a record $2.8 billion investment in fertilizer manufacturing through “CF Industries Nitrogen LLC”, a Chicago-area based company that will give CHS access to fertilizer at CF’s four plants.

CEO of the Jamestown Stutsman Development Corporation says the decision came as a shock.

Ingstad Family Media Reporter Steve Urness visited with CHS spokeswoman Lani Jordan and talked about the companies decision to withdraw from the proposed project.

CHS serves 1100 member cooperatives with 600,000 members across the upper Midwest.
