N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Day two of the 2015 edition of the North Dakota State Babe Ruth Class B Tourney started Saturday morning with two elimination games at Mirror Lake Ballpark. The first three games were all decided by 10-run rule in five innings, but the second quarterfinal game was a thriller.
Thompson 16 Washburn 5, 5 innings (elimination game)
Washburn was in the lead 5-0 going into the bottom of the third inning, when Thompson exploded for nine runs in the third and seven in the fourth to get the victory. With the loss, Washburn was eliminated going 0-2.
Valley City 12 Hettinger/Scranton 0, 5 innings (elimination game)
Valley City took control early scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning and then scoring at least two more runs every inning after until the fifth to beat the Bears of Hettinger/Scranton. Valley City knocks out HS as they lose both of their games. Rylee Bjork was the winning pitcher throwing a three hit shutout, he also added two hits offensively. Shortstop Avery Bennefeld was 3-for-3 at the plate knocking in four runs and scoring a run. Lead off man Devin Anderson was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the second inning, along with three RBI and scored two runs. It was Anderson’s third home run of the year.
Kindred 22 Velva 3, 5 innings (quarterfinal)
The defending Babe Ruth Champs made their presence known with a 19 run victory in the first quarterfinal. Starting pitcher Michael Hall was the winning pitcher and player of the game, he was 4-for-5 at the plate and scored a run.
Carrington 11 Grafton 8 (quarterfinal)
In a game that featured three lead changes and two ties and despite two home runs from Grafton, Carrington gets the victory and moves into the semifinal game against Kindred on Sunday. Carrington scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break an eight all tie. Starting pitcher Jayden Shipman for Carrington worked the bottom of the seventh, he would retire the first two batters he faced, then issue a walk, then strike out the next batter to get the win. Kyle Leapaldt and Shipman had three hits each for Carrington. Grafton’s Jacob Keeley had a solo home run in the bottom of the third and his teammate Andrew Schaan hit a two-run shot in the sixth to tie the game at eight.
