CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) On June 13, a woman and her cat were rescued by two Valley City women after the women smelled smoke coming from a nearby home that eventually ignited into flames.

Becky and Penny Capistran were getting ready for their rummage sale around 4am. They told the city commission what happened that morning.

Fire Chief Gary Retterath said it took firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control at 740 North Central Avenue during the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13.

A few days after the fire Retterath said smoking material was the preliminary cause of the house fire.
