(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes Post 36 American Legion baseball team took home the J.B. Graham Tournament Championship over the weekend in Ellendale.
Oakes won the first game of the day on Saturday 7-2 over Lisbon. Oakes’ bats came alive in the fifth inning, with five runs on five hits. Cole Kelly earned the win with a total of 14 strikeouts.
Later on Saturday, Oakes held off Fairmount-Hankinson 3-2. Grayson Roney pitched six solid innings to earn the win, while Bryce Meehl earned a save by coming on in the seventh inning, needing just seven pitches to close out the game.
On Sunday, Oakes pounced early on Washburn with six runs in the first inning, en route to an 11-1 victory in five innings. Washburn then fell to the losers bracket, defeated Ellendale, but then decided to forfeit the Championship game, so they could get back to Washburn to play a busy stretch of regional games this week.
Oakes has just as a busy stretch this week with three Southeast Region contest scheduled; the first Monday night at LaMoure against Post 19. Coverage on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM, Q101.1 FM and NewsDakota.com starts at 7:20 p.m., with first pitch around 7:20 p.m.
