CITY, ND – The Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership partnered with TL Childcare to develop a new physical activity policy for the childcare center. This is the first physical activity policy for a daycare center in our community.
This project was funded through a grant by the North Dakota Comprehensive Cancer Control Program whose mission is to help North Dakotans of all ages increase their physical activity levels and make other healthy choices to reduce the risk of cancer.
Andrea Winter and Sharon Buhr, both licensed registered dietitians at Young People’s Healthy Heart Program at CHI Mercy Health, met with Amber Ard, TL Childcare Director to review the physical activity environment at the daycare center.
Using the state and national health recommendations for children in early child care they wrote a new physical activity policy which was passed by the TL Childcare board in May.
ThE TL Childcare staff attended an in-service to learn about the new policy as well as new games and activities to keep children active. Sarah Milner, TL Childcare board member and Health and Physical Education Instructor at VCSU and Angela Williams, Health and Physical Education Instructor at VCSU with expertise in physical activity and the young child both provided opportunities to try the new games and offered resources to help children be active.
Adults who care for children, including child care providers, teachers, parents, family members and neighbors play a crucial role in helping children grow up to be healthy, active adults.
Healthy lifestyle habits, like healthy eating and getting physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming overweight and developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Nationally, 1 in 3 children and teens ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. In N.D. almost 17% of children age 2 to less than 5 years old are overweight and 14% are obese.
TL Childcare, a non-profit organization was established in 1989 to serve the needs of our community for after school child care and has expanded to include children from infants to 12 years old. TL Childcare has a seven member board with both parent and Valley City Public School representatives.
