CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) The city of Valley City will buyout the property of Gary Schlagel following two weeks of negotiations.

Under the agreement Schlagel will received $115,000 for his home at 474 5th Avenue Southwest.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven and City Commissioner Duane Magnuson negotiated with Schlagel over a two week period to reach this agreement.

Valley City Commissioner Mary Lee Nielson thanked Werkhoven and Magnuson for their work in the negotiating process. But she voted against the motion which passed on a 4 to one vote last night. She said she felt the settlement price was too high for property that was assessed by the city for $34,000. A second appraisal pushed that figure up to $89,000.

In May, the city threatened to use eminent domain to obtain the Schlagel property where phase one of the city permanent flood construction project is in the preliminary stage.
