(NewsDakota.com) Authorities in Oakes are getting the word out about a group of scammers who were in town over the weekend posing as students raising money for a trip.
Oakes police say a group of men and women between the ages of 15-18 visited residences Sunday claiming to sell magazines in order to fund a trip to Paris, France. The scammers asked for payment up front in the form of cash or a check, and upon a successful scam, would leave a receipt behind at the residence saying “Bug off, no points here”, presumably for the others in the group not to re-visit the residence.
Oakes School officials say there are no students presently selling any items door-to-door. Police are encouraging those who have been victimized to contact their financial institutions and the general public to report any suspicious activity.
