N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown has announced the building of a new million sports arena after announcing the largest one-time donation in the University’s history from the late Harold Newman.
During a press conference held on May 18th at the University, staff announced the donation that had been received by Newman and what they planned to use the funds for. President Bob Badal stated that a lot of growth had come to the University since he first arrived in 2002.
According to a release, a portion of the gift will be used to help fund nursing scholarships and the rest will be used to fund the building of the new athletic arena. Executive Vice President Polly Peterson stated that the gift would provide the first of many opportunities for the student athletes at the University of Jamestown.
In a letter received by the University on December 4th, 2009, Harold wrote to President Badal.
“Jamestown College is a shining example of Jamestown’s best. Your campus is beautiful, your staff dedicated, and your students fine examples of what today’s youth have to offer. As a resident of Jamestown, I am proud of the work you do educating young people in preparation for lives spent in service to family and community.”
Family friend of the Newman’s Dick Hall gave a statement on behalf of the family.
The cost of construction will be roughly $16 million. The donation amount was undisclosed by the University. The facility will be located on the East side of the Larson center where the current football practice fields are located. The arena will seat approximately 2,200 people and will have locker rooms, a booster room and a basketball court. No estimated start for construction was announced.
