Matt Nielson comments on Singles Tournament below:
Abby continues to improve and she is a force as shown in the doubles match against Sheyenne.

Rachel had the most absolute worst draw in the tournament.  She was matched up against West Fargo’s #1 player followed a Red River player that we just had floating in the bracket.  Rachel is a player that always hits the pillars.  Even though she was against very good opponents, she played well and was fun to watch.  As we are graduating two seniors, she will most likely be upping her roll during our 6-3 line-up regular season by playing in both the singles and doubles throughout.

Breanna played a former state qualifier in Poppe in the first round and played beautifully.  She took out Shanley’s #7 and then faced Wahpeton’s #3 player.  Breanna’s game is very good.  She hits great topspin and places her shots beautifully.

Matt Nielson comments on Doubles Tournament below:
Sam was looking to state qualify for the third year in a row and Maia for the first time in her career.  They played some good doubles against Red River, but lost, relegating them to the consolation bracket.  In the state qualifier, the match started a hair under 9am and Sam and Maia had it won just after 9:30.  Maia and Sam took care of business and state qualified with that match.  In the consolation semifinals, we played a very good Davies team.  We had our chances, but could not capitalize and Davies pulled away for the victory.  In the 7th place match, Sam and Maia cruised through the first set against Wahpeton’s #1 and #2 players.  They had a little more trouble in the second set, but pulled through to finish 7th.  With a 7th place finish, we will play the #2 team from the WDA on Friday at the start of competition.  Great job on state qualifying!

Reagan and Claire had a shaky start to their tournament.  They got down 1-3 against the same team that Abby and Breanna beat just the day before from WFS.  They responded by winning 12 of the next 13 games to make it to the quarterfinals.  In the quarters, they cruised through the first set and then McGregor and Wanzek caught fire in the second.  We weathered the storm to make it to the semifinals.  There, we played a very good team from Red River beat them soundly.  In the finals, whoever would take the net over, be aggressive, and believe was going to win the match.  We did so the first set.  In the second set, the belief left us for bit and Red River played well.  In the third, we started down 2-0 before coming back for a 5-4 lead at 40-15 with three championship points.  We didn’t play aggressive enough and Red River fought off those points.  Claire and Reagan rebounded to win the next game and then go up 40-15 again with three championship points.  On the 2nd of those, Claire believed and hit a monster overhead claiming the first EDC doubles championship since I believe 1991 when Susan Umsted and Brenda Ament won it.  Congratulations ladies!
