ND – The poultry exhibits have been canceled for the upcoming Red River Valley Fair in July because of avian influenza concerns.

Assistant General Manager Jodi Buresh said 4-H kids won’t be able to show their birds and Minnesota Turkey Growers can’t bring their turkeys to the fair.

The North Dakota State Fair isn’t allowing poultry exhibits this year either in July. Earlier this week the State Board of Animal Health halted bird movement to shows, exhibitions and public sales within the state of North Dakota.

NDSU Barnes County Extension Educator Randy Grueneich (Green-Ike) says the board of animal health will make a final determination of the situation in North Dakota on June 10.

Commercial Turkey flocks in Dickey & LaMoure counties in North Dakota had to be destroyed earlier this year due to avian influenza as well as a flock in Roberts County, South Dakota.
