N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A fiery oil train derailment forced a small community of about 25 people as well as local farmers out of the area in Heimdal on Wednesday, May 5th.
According to reports, residents are now going home after an evacuation order was lifted at around 9:30 PM Wednesday evening. Approximately six cars derailed and four of those cars burst and caught flame, forcing the evacuation of the community. No one was reportedly injured in the crash. Wells County Road 1 will remain closed to the public with exception of Heimdal residents.
Investigations are now ongoing to find the cause of the derailment. BNSF released a statement that its team had removed a majority of the crude oil from the cars. Once the National Transportation Safety Board completes their investigation, the cars will be moved off the site and remain cleanup with resume.
