N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Sirens were sounded Thursday afternoon in Carrington for a report of a grass fire South of the city on Highway 281.

KDAK’s Greg Grenz reports that at approximately 3:10 PM Thursday, April 16th, 3 units and 15 firefighters were called to a grass fire on Highway 281 South. According to Carrington Fire Chief Ken Wangen, the fire was caused due to a controlled burn that got away. Roughly 5 acres of land were affected.

“We want notification of all burns before they are lit. If the conditions are okay, burning will be allowed. But, if there is a reason for not burning, we will say no to the (controlled) burn.” Wangen stated.

Controlled burning is currently banned under a proclamation made by Governor Jack Dalrymple, but will be allowed if the authorities are notified and they confirm that it is safe to proceed. Today, the index is in the Very High range for Foster County and a majority of the state. The burn ban continues to remain in effect until April 30th.
