(NewsDakota.com) The opening day of the 2015 Region III Boys basketball tourney started Monday with four games at the Jamestown Civic Center. Two District 5 teams and two District 6 teams kept their seasons alive for another day.
Strasburg/Zeeland 55 Ellendale 43
The District 6 Champions only trailed once in the contest, and that was early in the first quarter. The Clippers were up by four after one, nine at half and 13 after three quarters of play to hold off the Cardinals.
Strasburg/Zeeland (18-5) picked up 22 points from Brody Nieuwsma, while Ellendale’s Hunter White put in 14.
LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 59 Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 44
The Imperials held close for three quarters, but would score only six points in the fourth quarter compared to 17 from the Loboes and fall by 15 points and end their season at 6-16.
Eighth grader Jamison Fettig led the NGS Imperials with 16 points followed by Junior Jaden Jangula with 12. Anthony Olson had 17 points for LLM who improves to 16-7. This game featured 11 lead changes and 14 ties.
Oakes 68 Medina-Pingree/Buchanan 57
The District 5 Champion Tornadoes of Oakes had a lead as large as 21 points in the second half, before the Thunder made a run to pull to within eight points. MPB (10-12) would make it no closer as the Tornadoes improved to 18-5.
Oakes had 29 points from Bryce Meehl, while MPB had 18 points form Cole Diede in the defeat.
Linton/HMB 61 Carrington 46
The Cardinals would tie the game at 20 in the second quarter but Senior Guard Jon Purintun would put up two quick three pointers to take a three point lead going into halftime. Senior Ryan Schneider would score nine of his 16 points in the third quarter to help the Lions get the victory, he also had 11 rebounds.
Purintun would lead all scorers with 21 points. Senior Brady Smith led Carrington with 14 points, four treys. Both teams combined for 16 3-pointers. Carrington ends their season at 15-7 overall.
Tuesday’s semifinal round features Strasburg/Zeeland meeting LaMoure-Litchville/Marion at 6 p.m. followed by Oakes and Linton/HMB around 7:40 p.m. Coverage of both games can be heard on TED-FM 98.3 and NewsDakota.com, while the Oakes/Linton game will be simulcast on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM.
