N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For the time since 2001 the Jamestown High boys basketball team will play in the North Dakota Class A State Tournament. The Jays came from behind to knock off Dickinson in the state-qualifier Saturday from the Bismarck Event Center, 72-69.
Nick Fuchs’ hit a three from the left wing with less than two minutes to go give Jamestown their first lead at 67-64. It was part of a steak of 11 in a row for Fuchs who helped rallied the Jays from a 12-point hole in the second half.
Following Fuchs’ three-pointer, Aanen Moody came down and answered for Dickinson with a three of his own. Tanner Lunzman than split two foul shots to move Jamestown in to a 68-67 lead.
The Midgets scored again to take the lead and had a chance for a three-point play from Nick Himmelspach, but he missed the free throw with 30 seconds left. Dickinson got the offensive rebound and Moody inexplicably took a three-point shot. The miss lead to a Noah Wanzek go-ahead layup in transition. Fuchs hit two free throws to make it a three-point game after a Dickinson turnover and the Midgets couldn’t convert on their final possession to seal it for the Jays.
Fuchs finished with 21, 18 of which came after halftime. Wanzek finished off a great two game stretch with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Both were named to the all-tournament team.
Jamestown will play Grand Forks Red River at 2pm on Thursday at the FargoDome in the State A quarterfinals. Matt Douglass and Mark Wiest will have the call on ESPN Jamestown and NewsDakota.com.
