(NewsDakota.com) – Not since 2001 has the Jamestown boys basketball team been to the state tournament. Saturday they will have their best chance in a long time to end that drought when they play Dickinson at 2:30pm in state qualifier. The Jays took care of St. Mary’s 63-48 in the loser-out round and now will play with a state berth on the line.
Friday afternoon the Jays got 17 points, 10 rebounds from junior Noah Wanzek on 7-7 shooting. Nick Fuchs chipped in with 15. Jamestown had a lead for most of the game between 12-16, but right up until the end it didn’t feel safe.
St. Mary’s Casey Uhler did what he could to keep the Saints in the game with 13 points after halftime, but without a second option the lead was too big to overcome. The Saints pulled within nine with four minutes and change left before Fuchs buried a three to push the lead back to 12.
Jamestown will play Dickinson at 2:30pm Saturday. The Jays and Midgets split their season series. Jamestown won big in the Buffalo City and lost 66-64 in Dickinson. Midget’s leading scorer Annan Moody didn’t play in the game at Dickinson, but is back now.
