N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – An Oakes high school student and Carrington High School were honored as the recipients of the North Dakota College and Career Readiness Awards, Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler said. The awards are given by the state and ACT Inc.
Brittany Roney, 18, a senior at Oakes High School, was presented with the Student Readiness award, while Carrington High won the College and Career Transition Award, its second such award in two years.
Roney and Carrington High were honored Monday at a ceremony in the Capitol’s Memorial Hall, which was hosted by Baesler, Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle and ACT executive Scott Montgomery.
In addition to being an outstanding student, Roney plays volleyball and basketball and is active in the FFA, the student council and the National Honor Society. She holds down two and sometimes three part-time jobs during the school year and is a tireless community volunteer, collecting blankets and food for the needy and helping to build bleachers for the local football and baseball fields.
She is respected by her teachers and classmates, who rallied around her and helped to raise money for her medical treatment when she was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Roney plans to study business administration at Valley City State University after graduation, focusing on accounting and agribusiness.
Carrington High was honored in part because of its broad array of career and technical education programs, which train students in business and technology, health care and agricultural education. It also won the College and Career Transition Award in 2014, and was honored as a national Blue Ribbon School in 2012.
The College and Career Readiness awards program is intended to recognize students, schools and other entities that symbolize North Dakota’s commitment to preparing students for success. An ACT Inc. committee will select national award winners in Student Readiness, College and Career Transition and two other categories. North Dakota will nominate Roney and Carrington High for national consideration.
