(NewsDakota.com) The second day of the 2015 North Dakota Class B District 5 Boys Basketball Tournament featured three games that all went down to the last moments; including one that was decided at the final horn. From Saturday’s play, the #3 and #4 seeds will be playing for the District 5 Championship on Monday night.
Midkota-Kensal 46 Barnes County North 44
The Mustangs earned their first victory of the 2014-15 season at just the right time; staying off elimination by defeating the Bison. It was a back and forth affair, with seven lead changes and five ties, but the difference was in the turnover margin; the Mustangs with 12 and 22 for the Bison.
Midkota-Kensal (1-20) had 13 points from Mason Smith, while Klay Frappeir had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. BCN had a double-double from Allen Contreas with 32 points and 25 rebounds.
Oakes 60 Carrington 57
Bryce Meehl scored the last of his team high 25 points via a three point basket at the final horn to give the Tornadoes a place in the District 5 Championshp, and their second win this season against the Cardinals.
Carrington (14-6) shot 62.5 percent from the floor, however Oakes (16-5) managed to score 20 of their points off of the 15 Carrington turnovers; whereas the Cardinals had seven points scored off of just five Oakes turnovers.
Brady Smith had 13 points to lead Carrington.
LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 65 Ellendale 64
After being thumped by the Cardinals in the regular season, the Loboes of LLM punched a ticket to the Class B Region III Tournament and a match with Oakes for the District title.
Ellendale (17-4) was able to hang around with 24 of their points coming from three point baskets, and finished the game with a three from Hunter White as time expired.
Both teams played with a heavy heart for most of the game, as Ellendale’s Adam White took an awful face-first fall in the first quarter attempting to block a shot. White was taken to the the hospital in stable condition, and was later released without any significant injuries.
LLM (15-6) had 20 points from Parker Stemen, while Anthony Olson added another 19. Brennan Vance and Hunter White each had 17 points for the Cardinals.
Monday’s play starts with the first of two Class B Region III Tournament Qualifying contests. Ellendale and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpeiler will meet at 4:30, followed by Carrington and Midkota-Kensal at 6 p.m.
