N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A bill that would have ended sobriety checkpoints in North Dakota has been shot down in the house on a 34-59 vote.
Prime sponsor, Representative Rick Becker says the checkpoints are not effective and raise legal concerns.
Becker says studies show DUI saturation patrols are the best way to catch drunk drivers and act as a deterrent.
Representative Naomi Mucha (*moo-shay) of Enderlin supports the checkpoints. She recently went through a Cass County checkpoint while traveling with grandchildren.
Law enforcement opposed the bill, arguing the sobriety checkpoints do work. Fargo’s been conducting them since 2004 and in the most recent campaign, made 3 DUI arrests.
