(NewsDakota.com) The Jamestown High School boys hockey team was not able to come back in their opening round contest of the WDA Tournament on Thursday against the Mandan Braves, falling by a 3-2 margin.
Both teams started a little rocky, before the Braves (12-8-1) scored the first goal of the game from Colton Murphy with almost five minutes left in the opening period. Jamestown (10-12) answered almost five minutes later on a two-on-one goal from Nick Stockert in the final minute of the period.
In the second period, the Jays gave up a powerplay goal to Trey Huber, while failing to score on a 5 on 3 man advantage that lasted longer than a minute.
Period three saw a turnover that netted another goal from the Braves halfway through the period from Trevor Leingang. The Jays did answer almost four minutes later with a goal from Jared Schultz, but could not tie the game before time expired.
Sawyer Schmidt made 22 saves for the Braves on 24 shots, while Brian Wenzel had 27 saves on 30 shots.
Jamestown will look to keep their season alive as they take on Williston Friday morning at 11. The Coyotes lost to Bismarck 6-1 earlier Thursday.
