CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The longest winning streak in the North Star Athletic Association women’s basketball division came to an end at seven games on Wednesday night when the Mayaville State Comets defeated the Valley City State Vikings 60-56. In the men’s game the Comets would complete the sweep defeating the Vikings 68-59.
Women: Valley City 56 Mayville State 60
The Comets were led by Liza Hogol in the game who scored a team high 23 points. Under the basket, Andi Gayner did the most damage for the Comets posting a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
In the second half the Vikings were able to cut the Comets lead to just two points but could never overcome the deficit that was created early in the game.
For the second straight game Georgia Williams surpassed 20 points in the game by posting a team high 26 points. Sierra Even posted 11 points and 9 rebounds to conclude her senior night just one board shy of a double-double.
The loss drops the Vikings to 19-8 overall and 7-2 in the North Star. The are currently in 2nd place in the league
Men: Valley City 59 Mayville State 68
In the night cap, the Comets go out to an early led taking a 20 point led midway though the opening period. At the end of the half the Vikings cut into the lead going into the break down 32-19.
The Vikings would come out in the second half going on a 10-0 run and eventually taking a one point lead. However, the Comets would get the led back and never relinquish it again.
Jayden Ferguson led the Vikings with 14 points n the game. Mac Kroeplin scored 13 points for VCSU. A.B. Najee posted a team high 14 points for the Comets. Under the basket Chuck Robinson scored a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The loss drops the Vikings to 1-8 in the conference with a 11-17 record overall. Valley City is currently in sixth place in the NSAA.
The Vikings men and women conclude the regular season at Presentation College on Saturday before the start of the North Star tournament next week. Saturday’s games can be heard on 1490 KOVC starting at 4:00pm.
