(NewsDakota.com) The contest between the Oakes and Carrington High School boys basketball teams had a sense of something special before the teams took the court on Monday night.

The result was just as good as contemplated, as Oakes rallied from a six point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the visiting Cardinals 56-52 at the South Gym of Oakes High.

Oakes (12-5 4-2 Class B District 5) had a lead as large as nine in the first half, before Carrington (12-5 5-1 District 5) found their wheels in the third quarter and took a lead as large as six in the final eight minutes of regulation.

With just under five seconds left, Senior guard Bryce Meehl, who finished with a team high 17 points, made two key free throws and picked up a steal of the ensuing inbound Carrington play to give the Cardinals their first District 5 loss of the season.

Ethan Zetocha finished with 16 points for the Tornadoes, who have now won three games in a row. Carrington, which saw their three game winning streak end, had 13 points from Seth Abaurrea.

Oakes heads to Milnor Tuesday night for a contest against the Bison. Coverage on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starts at 7:15 p.m. with tip around 7:30. Carrington hosts Velva on Thursday, February 19.
