N.D. (AP) – Police say North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler has been arrested on a preliminary assault charge and released from custody after posting bond.

A statement from the Bismarck Police Department says Baesler was taken into custody after officers responded to a report of domestic assault at a home early Sunday. Police say a 48-year-old man with a visible injury told officers that Baesler assaulted him.

Police say officers located Baesler and arrested her on a charge of simple assault. She was booked in the Burleigh County Detention Center. A detention officer says Baesler was released Sunday night on a $150 cash bond.

Baesler said in a statement that she wishes she’d sought help escaping the “unhealthy relationship” before things escalated.  A court hearing is set for Tuesday.
